  • Overview

    Must have current Iowa EMT or Paramedic Certification for EMT. Must have BLS certification for Paramedic and must have BLS, ACLS, and PALS Certification. Excellent clinical and communication skills.

     


     

    ESSENTIONAL FUNCTIONS

    1. Communicates effectively with patients, students, and the public.
      1. Acts as formal/informal role model for first responder and EMT students doing field internships.
      2. Participates in public relations and education efforts.
      3. Explains care and treatment to patients and their families. Provides for the psychological and emotional welfare of the patient and family.
      4. Communicates from field with medical control and allied emergency personnel.
    2. Applies knowledge and skills of emergency prehospital care and treatment.
      1. Acts within state of Iowa scope of practice for the EMT-B level.
      2. Provides basic patient assessment and care including assessment and management of the patient’s airway, breathing, and circulatory status.
      3. Maintains competency in basic airway skills.
      4. Completes required skills maintenance and competency standards.
      5. Performs capably and competently under stressful situations. Demonstrates competence during life threatening situations. Correctly interprets individual situations and acts according to protocol. Is calm and decisive in new or stressful situations. Recognizes limitations and seeks help from appropriate sources. Prioritizes patients’ conditions. Triages appropriately and according to protocol during a multi-casualty incident.
      6. Knows the principles of anatomy, physiology, and patient care used in emergency prehospital medicine.
    3. Operates and maintains ambulance associated equipment.
      1. Safely drives emergency vehicle in accordance with Iowa law and HCHC policy.
      2. Maintains emergency vehicles, medical, and communications equipment.
      3. Performs equipment checks.
    4. Professional development.
      1. Attends 80% of staff meetings/in-services.
      2. Attends 100% of mandatory in-services or meetings.
      3. Completes CEH’s to maintain EMT-B certification.
      4. Maintains current course completion status in BLS.
      5. Maintains course completion in EVOC. Annual refresher training required.
    5. Performs assigned and requested hospital duties.
      1. Assists other hospital departments as requested. Participates as a member of all required emergency response teams.
      2. Assists in controlling of combative patients.
      3. Maintains the cleanliness of the work environment.
      4. Respects patient confidentiality.
      5. Attends to required duties in the Print Shop
    6. Provides for a secure and safe environment.
      1. Anticipates safety and security concerns.
      2. Performs in potentially hazardous situations with proper consideration as to the safety of patient, vehicle, partner, and oneself.
      3. Utilizes proper lifting technique at all times.
      4. Utilizes appropriate infection control procedures.
    7. Cooperates as a team member of the department.
      1. Adapts to shift work, on call, and overtime.
      2. Follows uniform policy; displays good grooming habits.
      3. Schedules patient transfers appropriately.
      4. Arrives in the department on time and ready to work.
      5. Receptive to change and cooperates in implementation.
    8. Completes written documentation.
      1. Completes accurate and complete documents and charges.
      2. Completes documentation before the end of scheduled shift.

    Responsibilities

    QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Abilities – Associate in this position must demonstrate the ability to:
      1. Communicate effectively with all associates and visitors.
      2. Works independently under general supervision.
      3. Works weekends and holidays.
      4. Thinks, acts, and responds to emergency situations.
      5. Assists in the orientation of new associates.
      6. Provides clinical and field internship experience for EMS students.
      7. Performs clinical skills while observing BSI precautions.
      8. Performs emergency medical treatment.
      9. Drives an emergency medical vehicle.
      10. Meets residency requirement.
      11. Responds to HCHC in less than ten minutes while on call.

    2. Education and Experience
      1. Graduation from a Paramedic Specialist program
    3. Annual Requirements, Licensure, and certification
      1. Complete physical exam requirements that may be mandated by HCHC.
      2. Possess a current valid Paramedic Specialist certification as issued by the IDPH Bureau of EMS.
      3. Continue to obtain necessary CEH requirements to ensure (#2).
      4. Possess current, valid certifications as specified in Section II, Paragraph D.
      5. Possess a current, valid chauffeur license.
